Scientists report today on the ability to create sperm from bone marrow cells. Initially performed in men, the technique could potentially be performed in women and lead to a sperm cell made from a woman’s body. You got it right- that cell could then fertilize an egg leading to the first female-female conception in human history.
As a fertility specialist I couldn’t resist this story and wanted to share the reality and the hype. Prof. Karim Nayernia, Professor of Stem Cell Biology at the Instatute of Human Genetics at the Univeristy of Mewcastle on Tyne led the project reported in Biology of Reproduction. A summary of the study was released in the Independent today.
The researchers said they had already produced early sperm cells from bone-marrow tissue taken from men. They believe the findings show that it may be possible to restore fertility to men who cannot naturally produce their own sperm.
But the results also raise the prospect of being able to take bone-marrow tissue from women and coaxing the stem cells within the female tissue to develop into sperm cells, said Professor Karim Nayernia of the University of Newcastle upon Tyne.
The report suggests that “Scientists are seeking ethical permission to produce synthetic sperm cells from a woman’s bone marrow tissue after showing that it possible to produce rudimentary sperm cells from male bone-marrow tissue.”
The Two Mommy- No Daddy Baby Making Research Plan:
“Theoretically is it possible,” Professor Nayernia said. “The problem is whether the sperm cells are functional or not. I don’t think there is an ethical barrier, so long as it’s safe. We are in the process of applying for ethical approval. We are preparing now to apply to use the existing bone marrow stem cell bank here in Newcastle. We need permission from the patient who supplied the bone marrow, the ethics committee and the hospital itself.”
If sperm cells can be developed from female bone-marrow tissue they will be matured in the laboratory and tested for their ability to penetrate the outer “shell” of a hamster’s egg – a standard fertility test for sperm.
“We want to test the functionality of any male and female sperm that is made by this way,” Professor Nayernia said. But he said there was no intention at this stage to produce female sperm that would be used to fertilise a human egg, a move that would require the approval of the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority.
This same group reported last year that they created artifical sperm from embryonic sperm cells in mice.
(They) isolated stem cells from blastocysts, which are early-stage embryos only a few days old. From these cells were extracted those that would go on to form sperm, known as spermatogonial stem cells (SSCs). The SSCs were then cultured in the laboratory, and when some developed into sperm, they were injected into female mouse eggs and grown into early-stage embryos. The embryos were transplanted into the wombs of surrogate mothers.
The Genetic Disaster That Could Result: Faulty Imprinting. There is a huge genetic time-bomb here. The genetic phenomenon called imprinting. This describes the situation where a particular gene is marked or imprinted with a tag that says if it came from the mother or father- and more importantly only one of the other is active. For example for a particular gene it’s possible that only the maternal copy gene could be active and the copy that comes from the mother could be switched off. If this process goes wrong (mom and dad copy mistakes) then severe genetic diseases can result.

However, it is now known that the expression of a small number of the 30,000 or so genes in the cells depends on whether the gene copy was passed down from the father or the mother. This process, whereby the expression of a gene copy is altered depending upon whether it was passed to the baby through the egg or the sperm, is called imprinting. The term “imprinting” refers to the fact that some chromosomes, segments of chromosomes, or some genes, are stamped with a “memory” of the parent from whom it came: in the cells of a child it is possible to tell which chromosome copy came from the mother (maternal chromosome) and which copy was inherited from the father (paternal chromosome). This expression of the gene is called a “parent of origin effect” .

A child with female-female parents is going to have some psychological problems. In order for children to develop properly mentally they need a Male and a Female parent. (As seen through kids who only have one parent)
I think people who find children with only one parent underdeveloped mentally are ignorant. There are plenty of situations where children flourish when an abusive parent is removed, when someone dies in war and leaves their family, when someone dies from illness or is lost by some disaster. In order for children to develop properly, they need to have the proper mental capacity to do so, nothing more.

This is a dificult situation. When experimenting on life, (even the early forms of life), we have to realize that what are manipulating is precious. My only problem would be the hundreds of innocent babies killed during botched attempts at female-female conception.

After reading all 44 comments, I don’t understand why there is a need for immature replies to be posted… (from non supporter.. with all the trashy and non-convincing words). Although, some of the non-supporters have proven a good point, with mature statements.
For me, myself, I’m a man with a wife and 2 kids. I totally support the project, and hope it can come true for those who needs it (IF, OF COURSE, THE BABY IS WELL AND NORMAL). Some non-supporters think that this will eliminate man, like ME, and You, and others. Wrong.

Adoption is good, for people who wish to adopt. Every kid needs some sort of a parent(s).
I’m all up for this, I’m a girl. I’m Christian, but I’m Bi.
Men will not become obsolete,women in general straight, or bi, maybe lesbians will sometimes need a man in their life. Don’t fret fellas, Women have just found another way to say ‘we can have our own babies with out you.’ Some will object to this, some will be up for it. I’m another vote for this.
Men just like to dominate everything, it’s like their programming. But now since women are becoming more equal, men are finding it harder to dominate women. Since some men have caught wind of this.. they fear they will become obsolete and be wiped off the face of the planet. Highly unlikely, but a nice thought.
I still like this new idea for fertilization.

Nayernia is simply mistaken. The results they have achieved so far are in line with what we should expect, genetically – male bone marrow contains the information for the male gamete (sperm) which is stored on the Y-chromosome. Female bone marrow lacks this information and therefore cannot be used to create functioning sperm.
This has already been well established with stem cells, and I see no reason why bone marrow should be any different. It sounds like the professor is deliberately playing up the sensational aspects of his research for media coverage, whilst leaving himself an ‘out’ by noting that the cells produced may not actually be functional.
The media coverage of these discoveries also reflects a rather strange misandric attitude – headlines are making sweeping statements like ‘Men no longer needed’ or ‘Now women can reproduce without men’. In fact, all the research so far has led us in the opposite direction – male stem cells and now bone marrow can be diversified into both gametes (as the information for both is present in an XY individual), whilst female cells can only be diversified into eggs.

To the uninformed idiot who thought that women can’t do the “Dirty work” like men do solely for their upper body strength? please! Even if men become obsolete (I doubt that it would happen) there are still things women are able to do such as machines. In fact, I bet you in so many years that *if* men became obsolete, our world will be mostly if not all be controlled by machines. And another theory is the next evolution of humans will be a hermaphroditic one. That being said I think males won’t become obselete,like people have been saying, it will open up options for both gays and lesbians, and infertile couples. Roberto, you need to understand that not every woman is attracted to men, just like gay men aren’t attracted to women. Would you, Roberto sleep with a man? That’s the same idea of saying men need all women, so get it through your thick head, moron. Yeah, I’m a woman but i’m not a man-hater, just I dislike morons (both men and women, I don’t discriminate) I think it’s a great idea.

Professor, please consider that there many true nature laws is being broken in this article. Do we really need this? There adoption, best choice there is. Why does everyone try to go aganist the science (though I am not critizing it after all) just to keep things where it was before?

I think it probably make better human beings conceived from women. In reality women would do more for family that the bastards selfish men that have corrupted and destroy this world. In fact, I am glad to know that someday I would have a baby girl of my own with my eyes or her beautiful eyes.
I hope this becomes available in time for me and my gf to have a baby..This is amazing to think that someday some random guy doesn’t need to be in the equation just for me and the love and my life to have a child…And don’t worry guys there will always be a place for you in the straight woman’s heart.. As for the rest of us who love our partners and want to share with them the most precious and amazing gift,being the gift of life,this gives us the opportunity.I have wondered many times if such technology/scientific advancements existed that would allow me to pass on my genetics and mix them with the woman I love and here it is, a feasible possibility to do just that.
And as long as a child is in a loving environment it will grow up fine, and who’s to say that just because the parents are same sex doesn’t mean the opposite sex isn’t playing a key role in the child’s development? Just because we are lesbians doesn’t mean that we don’t have close male friends!

I personally think that , this is a problem with balance . I mean women have “some” semen right? But do they have enough to support in making a healthy child ? What if their children are the ones infertile although they have normal orientation? Won’t he be devastated? Also I don’t think it’s very good to go against nature since it may have side effects which aren’t proven yet . I , even if I find it interesting , One human life for an experiment would be too sad .
I think this would be great for people who cannot have kids and for lesbians couples who want to have their own baby with their own DNA from both partners I think this would be the best thing ever of course only if its safe on the baby they have to keep trying with animales till they see its safe enough to try on a human hopefully some year soon it works I hope it does.
