Teenager Plays Mind-Controlled Video Game » docinthemachine said in October 11th, 2006 at 10:17 pm

[…] I previously reported on BrainGate-the neural interface that connected a paraplegic’s brain to a computer for cursor control.  Researchers at Wash U have reported a sytem that uses surface electrodes to provide similar function.  “With approval of the patient and his parents and the Washington University School of Medicine Institutional Review Board, Leuthardt and Moran connected the patient to a sophisticated computer running a special program known as BCI2000 (developed by their collaborator Gerwin Schalk at the Wadsworth Center, New York State Department of Health in Albany) which involves a video game that is linked to the ECoG grid. They then asked the boy to do various motor and speech tasks, moving his hands various ways, talking, and imagining. The team could see from the data which parts of the brain and what brain signals correlate to these movements. They then asked the boy to play a simple, two-dimensional Space Invaders game by actually moving his tongue and hand. He was then asked to imagine the same movements, but not to actually perform them with his hands or tongue. When he saw the cursor in the video game, he then controlled it with his brain.”   « World’s Largest Seamless Display- Coming to the OR Someday |   […]

[…] I have written about the brain gate computer brain interface before.  The compnay has now announced its use by a patient with ALS.  Cyberkinetics Neurotechnology Systems, Inc. Cyberkinetics) announced that Leigh R. Hochberg, M.D., Ph.D., Principal Investigator in the pilot trial of the BrainGate Neural Interface System (BrainGate), presented preliminary findings from the trial’s first participant with ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis or Lou Gehrig’s disease) in his presentation at the Annual Meeting of the Society for Neuroscience in Atlanta […]

Brain Control Robot- It’s Alive! » docinthemachine said in December 16th, 2006 at 12:06 am

[…] I previously wrote about DARPA’s work on Braingate- the implanted neural interface and monkeys controlling robot arms.  Both of these projects are precursors to thought controlled prosthetic arms  or overcoming neurodegenerative disease(or Doc Oct for those of you focusing on the scarier military side).   […]

[…] I have written before on direct brain-computer interfaces such as the monkey brain controlled robot arm, a woman with a robotic brain controlled limb, soldiers with brain controlled limbs, a paraplegic with a matrix-neural plug in his grey matter, and a brain cap interface for gaming.   Damn- Kurzweil even predicts that once the singularity comes we will all be downloading our brains into computers forming humans v 2.0.  […]

Wiimote - revolusi HCI « Koedoes’s Weblog said in October 16th, 2007 at 5:19 pm
